Unit block caters to dog lovers

CONSTRUCTION has begun on the Gold Coast’s first dog-friendly tower.

Aptly named The Spot, the $20 million eight-storey tower is being built at the corner of Gold Coast Highway and Chelsea Ave at Broadbeach.Put forward by developer Shintaku Australia, the project will have an array of petfriendly features to attract animal owners.

The centrepiece will be a rooftop dog park. And there are plans for a hydrobath station to wash playful pups. The rooftop will also feature a community recreation area with a barbecue and a communal vegetable garden.

The developer has planned for 56 units to be spread across seven of the levels. Apartments will have a mixture of between one and three bedrooms. The building, which will sit just a handful of metres from the light rail route, will be constructed by Gold Coast company Condev.

The first residents are expected to move in by Christmas 2020. Condev managing director Steve Marais says the development will bring something “unique” to the Gold Coast.

“Dog ownership is increasing , as is apartment living, so it’s rewarding to do our part in delivering options for pet owners with beneficial projects like this one,” Mr Marais said.

“This provides an alternative option for people who are downsizing and pet owners who have had difficulty finding somewhere central and pet friendly.”

All of the units in the tower have large balconies, which are designed to function as outdoor rooms for residents .

Work comes a year after a development application was submitted to the Gold Coast City Council, which ticked off on the project. The development, as expected , will see the demolition of the buildings that had housed Rumi Persian Restaurant and the Sapporo Japanese Restaurant.

City planning committee boss Cr Cameron Caldwell welcomed the project.

“This is an innovative project which will be unique in its offerings and appeal to animal lovers,” Cr Caldwell said.
